Filters Plus WA is proud to be a distributor of the Direction Plus range of pre-filter kits for common rail diesel engine but why do you need one?
Why do I need an extra filter?
Let’s get one thing out of the way before we start. The number one cause of common rail engine failure is not a contaminant in the fuel (Although this can cause an issue, more on this later) but it is water in diesel that is the main culprit. If water is allowed to reach the injectors it can cause rust to form on the internal components and as this rust can dislodge and plug up the injector ports. In most cases the cost to replace injectors from the facotry are around $1000 + each. We have even heard of V8 Landcrusiers costing over $15,000 to reaplace a set!
Now I can hear some of you starting to flip out already that contaminant is not the main issue. let us be clear here, the contaminant in diesel fuel is still a problem and one that needs to be acknowledged but it is not the main issue.
Most common rail engines post 2007 come out standard with a 5 micron or lower OEM fuel filter. If you are unsure of what micron ratings are you can read all about them here – Tech Talk // Understanding Micron Rating. This means that most contaminant particles above 5 microns are being stopped by your factory fuel filter. The fuel nozzle port on most injectors is also well above this range, being between 120 microns to 200 microns. Although over time contaminant can build up on the ports and internal parts of an injector this is very rare when fuel is being filtered at 5 microns and below.
There is a lot of misinformation doing the rounds that you need to put a 2-micron filter after your OEM filter to be protected. This is false. Putting a higher than 5-micron filter before your OEM factory filter will give you the same protection from water in diesel as a post filter will as long as it can efficiently separate water out. Now to clarify this point a bit more we are not saying that you can’t put a 2-micron filter after your OEM factory filter as this will make the diesel cleaner at the end point but you will restrict the flow of fuel getting to your engine. In most circumstances, you would not notice this but in some rare cases whilst at high RPM and load this could cause a flat spot or even starve the engine of fuel. The Fuel manager filters that come with all the Direction Plus kits can separate out 99% of incoming water and save you from injector failure.
So what micron rating should I use?
All the Direction Plus kits come standard with 30 Micron filters for two important reasons. The first is to ensure a greater spread of contaminants over the Pre-filter and your factory OEM filter, rather than the factory filter doing all the work and requiring more frequent change outs and the secondary filter not doing much except separating out water and catching a small amount of contaminant. The second reason was mention above and is to ensure there is never a possibility of fuel starvation to your engine.
Again we are not suggesting for a second that you can not install a 2-micron filter after your OEM filter if you still want to and all of the Direction Plus kits can have their 30-micron filters exchanged for 2-micron version upon request. Please note that in some circumstances more fuel host and different fittings may have to be purchased if you want to install it as a post-filter instead of a pre-filter.
